Artistic Curriculum of Chor Leoni Men’s Choir
A rich full-bodied sound, innovative programming, technical precision, meticulous intonation, and versatility, coupled with an ever-present musical curiosity and commitment to the creation of new Canadian choral works, are qualities that have catapulted Chor Leoni to national and international fame since its founding by Diane Loomer C.M. in 1992. The choir is regarded as a leader in the Canadian male choir movement, and acts as mentors and inspiration to choirs across the country.

Chor Leoni was a triple winner in the biennial 2002 CBC / Radio-Canada National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs, winning first place honours in the Men’s Category, a competition-wide prize for the Best Performance of a Canadian Work, and – the first time that a male choir has won this distinction – the top prize in the Contemporary Category. The choir had previously won top honours in the CBC Radio Competition in the Men’s Category in 1994 and 2000. On the strength of their triple win, the choir was invited to represent the CBC in the European Broadcasting Union’s prestigious Let the Peoples Sing 2003 International Choral Competition in the Adult Choir category. Competing against choirs from twenty-one countries, Chor Leoni was the only North American choir and the only male choir to advance to the finals, and placed fourth overall.

Although none of the singers within Chor Leoni are paid, the choir is considered a professional ensemble by such granting organizations as The Canada Council and The BC Arts Council, and has received touring funding from the federal government under the status of a professional choir in recognition of their level of performance.

A cappella works remain the mainstay of the choir’s repertoire, but the choir also provides bridges to music from around the world and is strongly committed to the commissioning, performance, and recording of new works by Canadian composers.

Chor Leoni has established Remembrance Day and Summer Solstice concerts as fixtures on the Vancouver choral calendar, performed frequently with Vancouver ensembles and orchestras, toured nationally, and recorded several national CBC broadcasts. They have performed for the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors’ PODIUM 2000, the International Society of Music Educators’ 2000 convention, and for the 2002 regional conference of the American Choral Directors Association in Tacoma, WA. They were the Canadian choral representative for the 2002 AmericaFest World Festival of Singing for Boys and Men at Collegeville, MN, and received a standing ovation for their solo performance at the Sixth World Symposium on Choral Music, held in Minneapolis, MN in August 2002.

The choir has produced 11 CDs. Their Yuletide Fires CD was voted the Outstanding Choral Recording of 2004 by the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors, and won a Western Canadian Music Award as the 2004 Outstanding Classical Recording. Circle of Compassion, featuring repertoire from recent Remembrance Day performances, was the recipient of the 2008 National Choral Award for Outstanding Choral Recording given by the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors, and their Healing Voices recording project, featuring music that focuses on healing and calming, also received the 2008 Outstanding Sponsorship Award from the ACCC. The choir’s newest CD, Yuletide Fires 2, was released in 2011.
