Raw Food Diets: What’s True, What’s Not? — Vesanto Melina, MS, RD

Raw Food Diets: What's True, What's Not? -- Vesanto Melina, MS, RD

Do our bodies need the enzymes from plant foods? Are cooked foods toxic? Is food combining important for optimal digestion and health? Are inorganic minerals useful or useless, nutritionally? Should we be eating buckwheat greens, sprouted legumes, raw mushrooms, and sea vegetables? For maximum benefit, must our diet be 100 percent raw? What do we learn from the major scientific studies about creating an optimal raw food, or high-raw diet? Vesanto Melina is a Registered Dietitian and co-author of Becoming Raw (with Brenda Davis) and the Raw Food Revolution Diet (with Cherie Soria and Brenda Davis), as well as the bestselling nutrition classics Becoming Vegan, Becoming Vegetarian, The New Becoming Vegetarian, Raising Vegetarian Children, and The Food Allergy Survival Guide. Vesanto taught nutrition at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada and at Seattle’s Bastyr University. She also co-authored the joint position paper on vegetarian diets of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada. Her website is www.nutrispeak.com

I’ve been vegan for a number of years and I ate at Cousen’s cafe for lunch in Patagonia, AZ……. honestly? I can’t see how eating that way is healthy. I was starving in an 1 hour..and I’m pretty thin….the food did nothing for me.

80-10-10 diet by Doug Graham needs to be followed for optimal health. Too much? fat raw or cooked is bad for any body. A healthy body is a lean body.

Most scientists saying “no studies” mean no studies published in peer reviewed journals.? I don’t believe that either Wigmore or Cousens published any of their studies in peer-reviewed journals.

  9. MrVeggieman says:

Ann Wigmore has studies of wheatgrass killing cancer..Gabriel Cousens has an extensive documeted study on a low Glycemic diet and diabetes, yet she states, there are no studies.. Maybe the researcher could have went to the sources, as opposed to? third party opinion of the sources

There’s quite a bit of mis information.. especially concerns with Vitamin D, and Omega deficiency.. She states concerns, but offers no studies to support this is a common occurrence, or even at a higher rate than as a vegan.. The experience as a dietician is based in a background that uses an entirely different food pyramid,? and interchanging that with a raw, or even vegan diet, is starting out as flawed.. Gershiwn had peer review studies of a high raw diet and curing cancer,
